Fourth meeting of the ISHAM working groups on Black Yeasts and Chromoblastomycosis

Hidden Danger, Bright Promise

Curitiba, Brazil, 1−4 December, 2011

Many reports of epizootics from the older literature clearly demonstrate that the black yeast and allies are regularly encountered as causative agents of diseases in vertebrate animals.  In humans, the infections range from mild cutaneous to fatal neurotropism with severe mutilation. These agents could be found in patients without immune disorder or underlying metabolic disease. Outside humans, particularly cold-blooded vertebrates are susceptible mainly to Exophiala species. The ability to assimilate alkylbenzenes present in sweat and nervous tissues has been suggested as a virulence factor, which on environmental species related could represent a potential biotechnological on biodegradation of aromatics hydrocarbonates for bioremediation.

This event will be an extension of previous meetings held in Graz, Austria, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where leading international researchers and students were brought together to present their latest research data. The next workshop will be held in Curitiba (Brazil), the largest city in the prosperous Southern region, surrounded by amazing places to visit such us the mountain coast Atlantic Forest. We plan to make participation free of charge; the main organization costs will be carried by our sponsors that are gratefully acknowledged.

We look forward seeing you in Curitiba. Brazil!

Sponsors: The meeting will be supported by the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM), Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Tecnologia (CNPq), Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Professores do Ensino Superior (CAPES), Fundação Araucária and Grupo Integrado de Aqüicultura (GIA), Paraná, and Laboratório Cedro, Maranhão...... more
